Introduite en 1968, l’Ellipse de Patek Philippe ne doit pas son design au hasard. En effet, celui-ci est basé sur le nombre d’or, considéré comme la "divine proportion" que l’on retrouve dans la nature ainsi que dans les plus grandes œuvres architecturales et artistiques.

La Réf. 3589 a fait ses débuts en 1970, coïncidant avec l'apparition de boîtiers plus grands et plus proéminents. Cette référence était disponible dans différents matériaux et styles de cadran, mais cette configuration est sans doute celle qui se distingue le plus des autres grâce à la manière dont sont fabriqués les index et chiffres sur le cadran, en étant creusés, ce qui confère une profondeur supplémentaire par rapport aux variantes avec index appliqués ou peints plus courantes à l'époque. 

Les cadrans, fabriqués par le spécialiste Singer pour Patek Philippe, offrent un contraste à la fois simple et saisissant entre les index et aiguilles en or jaune et le cadran bleu à la finition soleillée. 
Le symbole "Sigma σ" présent sur le cadran à 6h a été introduit dans les années 1970 par l'Association pour la Promotion Industrielle de l’Or (APRIOR), et met en avant les manufactures prestigieuses qui utilisent des matières précieuses pour leurs montres et indique que le cadra, et les aiguilles sont en or pour ce modèle.

Cette version de l’Ellipse, beaucoup plus grande que le modèle original, dispose d'un boitier en or jaune de 32,5 x 36mm avec une lunette elliptique polie et un boîtier légèrement plus large avec une finition soleillée.

Autre singularité, cette Ellipse est animée par le calibre automatique 28-255, le même mouvement qui équipe notamment la Nautilus 3700, ce qui souligne sa durabilité et qui comptait parmi les calibres les plus fins de l'époque. 

La montre est livrée avec un extrait d'archives Patek Philippe.
