Lancée en 1956, la Day-Date fut la première montre à afficher, en même temps, le jour et la date à travers une ouverture dans le cadran. Rolex ne sait jamais caché d’être associé à des personnalités influentes, dont un certain nombre de présidents, ce qui a d’ailleurs valu à ce modèle ce surnom.
D'un diamètre de 36mm, la référence 18038 fut produite entre 1977 et 1989. C'est la première génération de Day-Date a être équipée d'un verre saphir garantissant une étanchéité à 100 mètres et une meilleure résistance aux rayures. Une grande variété de configurations de cadran étaient proposées à l'époque, dont certains en pierre dure ou encore en [bois](https://www.41watch.com/en/accueil/891-rolex-daydate-or-jaune-cadran-bois) (comme on eu récemment nos amis de chez 41Watch), mais tous étaient désormais plat, à la différence des cadrans bombés présents sur la référence 1803. 

L'amélioration la plus utile pour cette référence a été l'ajout d'une fonction de réglage rapide de la date grâce à la couronne. Cette avancée technique fut permise grâce au nouveau calibre 3055 remplaçant les calibres 1555 et 1556 utilisés dans la génération précédente.

Dès la sortie de ce modèle, Rolex offrait la possibilité de choisir entre 25 langues différentes pour l'affichage du jour, l'anglais étant évidemment le plus couramment utilisé à travers le monde.
