Lancée en 1956, la Day-Date fut la première montre à afficher, en même temps, le jour et la date à travers une ouverture dans le cadran. Rolex ne sait jamais caché d’être associé à des personnalités influentes, dont un certain nombre de présidents, ce qui a d’ailleurs valu à ce modèle ce surnom.

D'un diamètre de 36mm, la référence 1803 fut produite du début des années 1960 à 1977. C'est la première génération de Day-Date a disposé d'une production étendue sur plus de 15 ans. La principale caractéristique de ce modèle tient son cadran bombé dit "Pie-pan" et à son verre plexiglas bombé. Ce cadran, plus rare que les versions classiques, dispose d'une minuterie sur la partie extérieure.

Le calibre Rolex 1555 dispose d'une réserve de marche d'environ 42 heures et n'est pas équipé du système de mise à date rapide à la couronne, fonctionnalité apparaissant avec la référence suivante 18038 et le calibre 3055.

Le bracelet dit "Président" qui équipe cette montre est apparu lors du lancement de ce modèle en 1956. 

Sur cet exemplaire précis, la boucle est marqué d'une inscription "Made in Japan".
Dans les années 60, le Japon, dont l'économie était en plein essor, décida d'imposer sur les produits étrangers des droits d'importation afin de protéger leur économie. Pour contourner ces droits, Rolex décida d'exporter uniquement la montre elle-même, sans le bracelet, et de faire fabriquer les bracelets directement au Japon en y apposant l'inscription "Made in Japan".

Dès la sortie de ce modèle, Rolex offrait la possibilité de choisir entre 25 langues différentes pour l'affichage du jour, l'anglais étant évidemment le plus couramment utilisé à travers le monde.
