Lancée en 1956, la Day-Date a été un garde-temps pionnier, étant la première montre à afficher simultanément le jour et la date par le biais d'un guichet sur le cadran. Rolex, connue pour son association avec des personnalités influentes, dont de nombreux présidents, a donné son surnom à ce modèle. La référence 18238, d'un diamètre de 36 mm, a été produite de 1989 à 2000. 

Contrairement aux cadrans "pie-pan" de la référence 1803, tous les cadrans de la 18238 sont désormais plats. L'introduction d'une double fonction pour le réglage rapide de la date et du jour par l'intermédiaire de la couronne constitue une amélioration significative pour cette référence. Cette amélioration technologique a été rendue possible par le nouveau calibre 3155, qui succède au calibre 3055 de la génération précédente.

Lors de sa sortie, Rolex a proposé un choix remarquable de 25 langues différentes pour l'affichage du jour, l'anglais étant la langue la plus répandue dans le monde.

Cette montre ne semble jamais avoir été polie et très peu portée compte tenu de la patine d'oxydation présente sur le boîtier et le bracelet. Cette patine naturelle superficielle peut être effacée grâce à un simple et léger avivage sur demande. 

Cette montre est livrée avec sa boîte, la garantie internationale Rolex d'origine (date de vente 1995), une carte de garantie de service de 2005 et les manuels.
