Entre le milieu des années 1980 et le début des années 2000, l'industrie horlogère a dû faire face à de nombreux défis avec la crise du quartz qui l'a poussée à se réimaginer et à sortir de son histoire traditionnelle. 

Vacheron Constantin a répondu avec la Mercator, lancée en 1994 pour commémorer le 400e anniversaire de la mort de Gerardus Mercator. Cet affichage inhabituel du temps a été conçu pour ressembler à un compas de navigation qui représente les deux aiguilles double rétrograde. Le design rend hommage au cartographe qui a créé la projection de Mercator, qui est devenue la « carte du monde » standard que nous connaissons aujourd'hui.

Le cadran de la Mercator est composé de lignes cartographiques gravées, celle-ci représentant les **Amériques**, chaque ligne étant méticuleusement remplie d'émail noir brillant. Un détail subtil mais significatif se trouve à 4 heures sur le bord du cadran - un lettrage délicat indiquant « J&L Genbrugge ». Cet hommage est rendu au couple belge responsable de la conception et de la fabrication de ce modèle.

Avec un boîtier en or jaune de 36 mm de diamètre, la Mercator dispose d'une lunette à étage avec des cornes droites qui reprennent ce design. La palette monochromatique du boîtier et du cadran permettent au dessin artistique de la carte d'attirer toute l'attention.

Tous les modèles Mercator utilisent le même mouvement - le calibre 1120 ultra-fin à remontage automatique, basé à l'origine sur le calibre Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 - qui a été modifié pour incorporer le mécanisme bi-rétrograde pour les heures et les minutes.

Cette montre est livrée avec sa boîte, sa sur-boîte, son certificat d'authenticité d'origine et ses manuels.
