Introduced in 1956, the Day-Date was a pioneering timepiece, being the first watch to concurrently showcase the day and date through an aperture on the dial. Rolex, known for its association with influential personalities, including numerous presidents, earned this model its nickname. The reference 18238, boasting a 36mm diameter, was in production from 1989 to 2000. Unlike the "pie-pan" dials of the earlier reference 1803, all dials for the 18238 were now flat. A significant enhancement for this reference was the introduction of a dual function for swift date and day adjustment via the crown. This technological upgrade was made possible by the new caliber 3155, a successor to the caliber 3055 featured in the previous generation.

Upon its release, Rolex offered a remarkable selection of 25 different languages for the day display, with English being the most widely used globally.
