The first Rolex model equipped with a quartz movement was the Reference 5100, introduced in 1970 and produced in limited quantities until 1972. This model was equipped with the Beta-21 caliber, designed by the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH), a consortium of approximately 20 Swiss watch manufacturers, including Rolex, to create the first Swiss quartz movement. 

Since Rolex wanted to develop its own movement in-house, the first Oysterquartz models did not appear until 1977 with the Datejust (caliber 5035) and Day-Date (caliber 5055). The model we have here, the Oysterquartz Day-Date, reference 19018N, features a 36mm yellow gold case with an integrated bracelet of flat links and a fluted bezel. Unlike the 19018 version, this model does not have bevels on the lugs and features a vertical brushed finish on the upper portion.

The 5055 caliber features a 32 kHz oscillator (four times that of the Beta-21) to compensate for temperature effects, ensuring an accuracy of less than one minute per year—significantly superior to that of all Rolex mechanical movements at the time. Additionally, this caliber features a stop-seconds function and dual date and day adjustment, a feature that did not appear on automatic calibers until 1988.

The watch comes with a Rolex travel pouch, its Rolex certificate of origin (date of sale 1987), two Rolex service warranty cards dated 2009 and 2025, and manuals.
