The Rolex Explorer stands out as a pure embodiment of Rolex's 'tool watch' philosophy, characterized by its simplicity and utility.

Folding Clasp

Rolex introduced the ref. 1016 Explorer in 1959 and marked the first Explorer with “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" printed on the dial. This model holds the distinction of being one of Rolex's longest-produced watches, by continuing to be produced until 1989. It stands out as a pure embodiment of Rolex's 'tool watch' philosophy, characterized by its simplicity and utility.

Many slight variants exist within the 1016 reference, but all share an iconic black dial with Arabic numerals at three, six, and nine o'clock. The example we have here is referred to as the Mark 1 matte dial. It marks Rolex’s move away from gilt dials toward the more utilitarian matte dial. This specific example is an early Mark 1 matte dial, identifiable by its distinctive 'frog's foot' dial where the Rolex coronet resembles a frog's foot. This dial matches perfectly the 1.7M serial number of this watch.

Additionally, it houses a non-hacking Cal. 1570 movement, which beats at 19,800 VPH, faster than the previous generation of 1560 calibres. This model bears a "ROW" on the movement, as an import mark for the US market. This model is also fitted with a riveted Oyster bracelet made by C&I, an American manufacturer, at the time when Rolex ordered these bracelets in order to reduce customs duties on watches imported into the United States.
