The Grand Complications range from Patek Philippe represents the pinnacle of the watchmaking art, with Perpetual Calendars, Minute Repeaters, Tourbillons, Split-second Chronographs and Celestials. 

Folding Clasp

The Patek Philippe reference 3970 combines a perpetual calendar with a chronograph complication. This timepiece illustrates the Geneva-based company's watchmaking expertise and is part of the brand's legacy.

Following on from the iconic reference 2499, the 3970 was produced from 1986, during complicated times for the Swiss watchmaking industry (especially with the quartz crisis). It was also introduced one year after the classic Perpetual Calendar reference 3940 illustrated in this [article](https://geneva.41watch.com/journal/technical-reviews/patek-philippe-perpetual-calendar---3940g-vs-5140g). 

Four successive series succeeded throughout the production until 2004, we wrote an in-depth [article](https://www.41watch.com/en/blog/patek-philippe-calendrier-perpetuel-chronographe-3970-the-four-series-n136) if you want to learn more about these variations. 

Produced in 2001, this example belongs to the fourth and last series, which scholarship indicates was made in 2'000 examples, encompassing all four metals (yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum).
This particular platinum Ref. 3970EP stands out due to its uncommon semi-glossy black dial with sword-shaped indexes, a feature present in only a few instances as most platinum pieces were equipped with glossy black dials and diamond-set indexes.

The dial on this fourth series 3970EP respects the same key design principles as other Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronographs by displaying the day and month at 12 o'clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter and leap year at 3, the date and moonphase at 6 and the seconds subdial and AM/PM indication at 9. 

Underneath, caliber CH 27-70 Q, based on the Lemania 2310 to replace the Valjoux 13-130 of the reference 2499, is a manual winding movement equipped with a column wheel mechanism and bears the Geneva Seal hallmark. 

This watch comes with its box, outer-box, Patek Philippe extract from the Archives, second closed caseback, Patek Philippe tag, stylus and an additionnal Patek Philippe leather strap.

The Patek Philippe reference 5320G was first introduced in 2017, as the latest chapter in a legacy of great perpetual calendars. 
This specification iteration with a rose gold-colored opaline dial appears in 2022. The watch displays four hands - hours, minutes, and seconds for the time, with the date indicator at six. Overall, the dial layout is extremely legible, elegant and designed perfectly, with two discrete windows showing the leap year and day-and-night indicators, respectively, on each side of the moon.

Inside the watch, the 5320G movement is based on the calibre 324, with centrally-mounted solid-gold rotor. The calibre 324 S Q (’S’ for seconds, ‘Q’ for quantième perpétuel) serves as a refined perpetual calendar version of the self-winding 324.

The watch is delivered full set with its second closed caseback.
