Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the first watch to simultaneously display the day of the week and the date in separate windows on the dial. Rolex has never concealed its association with influential personalities, including many heads of state, earning this model the nickname “President”.

Reference 18296, produced from 1989 onwards, is one of the most prestigious variations of the Day-Date, made exclusively in platinum. With a diameter of 36 mm, it is distinguished by its diamond-set lugs - a detail that further accentuates its luxurious and exclusive character, and contrasts with the simplicity of the smooth bezel.

Unlike previous generations, this model is equipped with caliber 3155. This automatic movement incorporates a quick-change day and date function via the crown, a major evolution in terms of user comfort. It offers a power reserve of around 48 hours and is chronometer-certified.

The dial of this model may vary from version to version, but it is often offered with precious finishes: diamond hour markers, mother-of-pearl or fine stone dials, and day displays available in several languages, in keeping with Day-Date tradition. This particular model features a dial with diamond hour-markers. Note that dials for platinum models feature larger diamonds than those for gold models. The day display is in English, the most commonly chosen language worldwide.

The **President** bracelet, a signature of the collection since 1956, is a natural accompaniment to this reference. Also in platinum, it features a folding clasp with invisible buckle, offering excellent comfort and a refined aesthetic.

It is the first generation of Day-Date to be equipped with a sapphire crystal guaranteeing water resistance to 100 meters and better scratch resistance. A wide variety of dial configurations were offered at the time, including some in hard stone or even in [wood](https://www.41watch.com/en/accueil/891-rolex-daydate-or-jaune- dial-wood) (as our friends from 41Watch recently had), but all were now flat, unlike the "pie-pen" dials fitted on the reference 1803.

The most useful upgrade for this reference was the addition of a single quick-set date using the crown. The technical advancement came thanks to the new caliber 3055 replacing the calibers 1555 and 1556 used in the previous generation.

When this model was released, Rolex offered the possibility of choosing between 25 different languages for the day display, English being obviously the most commonly used throughout the world.

With a diameter of 36mm, reference 1803 was produced from the early 1960s to 1977. It was the first generation of Day-Date to be produced for more than 15 years. The main feature of this model is its domed "Pie-pan" dial and domed plexiglas crystal. This dial, set with 8 brilliant-cut diamonds and 2 baguette-cut diamonds at 6 and 9 o'clock, is around 5 times rarer than the classic version with applied indexes in yellow gold.

The Rolex Calibre 1555 has a power reserve of approximately 42 hours and is not equipped with the quick-date system, a feature appearing with the following reference 18038 and Calibre 3055.

As soon as this model was released, Rolex offered a choice of 25 different languages for the day display, English obviously being the most commonly used throughout the world.

This watch comes "watch only" with a gold plated Rolex pin buckle.

The "President" bracelet fitted to this watch was introduced when the model was launched in 1956. 

On this particular model, the buckle is marked "Made in Japan".
In the 1960s, Japan, whose economy was booming, decided to impose import duties on foreign products in order to protect their economy. To circumvent these duties, Rolex decided to export only the watch itself, without the bracelet, and to have the bracelets made directly in Japan, stamped with "Made in Japan"

The model we have here has a superb black dial with a sunray finish set with 8 brilliant-cut diamonds and 2 baguette-cut diamonds at 6 and 9 o'clock. This "no lume" dial has no luminescent material at each hour or on the hands.

Here, however, it is in Arabic that this information can be read, a first indication of the rarity of this model.

It's on the back of the watch that all the magic happens, with the presence of the Sultanate of Oman's emblem logo. This symbol, composed of a sheathed Khanjar dagger with two crossed swords, symbolises the historical weapons used by the people of Oman. 

The warranty card dated 2020 is stamped by Khimji Ramdas, the only official retailer in Muscat, Oman. This suggests that the watch was given as a gift by the royal family of Oman.

Our model has a rare black dial - the majority of production was silvered - with the inscription **"Swiss Made"** at 6 o'clock. This feature is only found from 1999 onwards and therefore only available for one year, indicating luminescent coating for index and hands, which match perfectly with our model produced in 1999. A dial with this inscription and an earlier production date would indicate that the original dial had been replaced during service.

The first Rolex model equipped with a quartz movement was the reference 5100, introduced in 1970 and produced in limited quantities until 1972. This model was equipped with the Beta-21 calibre, designed by the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH), a consortium of around 20 Swiss watch manufacturers, including Rolex, to create the first Swiss quartz movement. 

As Rolex wanted to develop their own movement in-house, the first Oysterquartz models did not appear until 1977 with the Datejust (calibre 5035) and Day-Date (calibre 5055). The model we have here, the Oysterquartz Day-Date, reference 19018N, has a 36mm case in yellow gold with an integrated bracelet with flat links and a fluted bezel. Unlike the 19018 version, this model has no chamfers on the lugs and a vertical brushed polish on the upper part.

The calibre 5055 has a 32 khz oscillator (4 times more than the Beta-21) to compensate for the effects of temperature and guarantee an accuracy of less than one minute per year, far superior to that of all Rolex mechanical movements at the time. In addition, this calibre has a hacking-second function and dual date and day setting, which did not appear on automatic calibres until 1988.

The watch comes with a Rolex travel pouch, its Rolex certificate of origin (date of sale 1987), a 2009 Rolex service guarantee card and manuals.

Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the first watch to simultaneously display the day and date through an opening in the dial. Rolex has never shied away from its association with influential personalities, including a number of presidents, which earned this model its nickname.

With a diameter of 36mm, reference 18039 was produced between 1977 and 1989. A wide variety of dial configurations were offered at the time, including some in hard stone or even [wood](https://www.41watch.com/en/day-date/1077-rolex-daydate-or-jaune-cadran-bois) (as our colleagues at 41Watch recently had), but all were now flat, unlike the domed dials present on the older reference 1803. 

The most useful improvement for this reference was the addition of a quick date-setting function via the crown, and the addition of a sapphire crystal to guarantee greater resistance and water-resistance. This technical advance was made possible by the new 3055 caliber, replacing the 1555 used in the previous generation.

Our model features a beautiful silver dial with railway track minute track around the circumference. The tritium hands have developed a light cream patina that perfectly matches the tritium plots of the original dial. This model is a perfect choice for those who like their watches understated and discreet, but can't be confused with a Datejust that doesn't have the famous 3-link President bracelet.

As soon as this model was released, Rolex offered a choice of 25 different languages for the day display, English being the most commonly used worldwide.

Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was a pioneering timepiece, being the first watch to simultaneously display the day and date through an aperture on the dial. Rolex, known for its association with influential personalities, including many presidents, gave this model its nickname. Reference 18238, with a diameter of 36 mm, was produced from 1989 to 2000. 

Unlike the “pie-pan” dials of reference 1803, all 18238 dials are now flat. The introduction of a double function for quick date and day setting via the crown is a significant improvement for this reference. This technological improvement has been made possible by the new caliber 3155, which succeeds the previous-generation caliber 3055.

At the time of its release, Rolex offered a remarkable choice of 25 different languages for the day display, English being the most widespread language in the world.

This watch appears to have never been polished, and has been worn very little, given the oxidative patina on the case and bracelet. This superficial natural patina can be removed with a simple, light polishing on request. 

This watch is delivered with its box, original Rolex international warranty (sale date 1995), 2005 service warranty card and manuals.

The main feature of this model is its domed “Pie-pan” dial and domed Plexiglas crystal. This dial, rarer than the classic versions, does not feature tritium luminescent dots, indicating that this watch may have been intended for the Asian market. The solid hands also lack the tritium corresponding to the model's specificity.

The Rolex caliber 1555 has a power reserve of approximately 42 hours and is not equipped with the crown-operated quick-date system, a feature that appears with the following reference 18038 and caliber 3055.

The “President” bracelet fitted to this watch was introduced when the model was launched in 1956. 

On this particular model, the dial is “no lume”, i.e. there is no luminescent material on either the dial or the hands, indicating that this watch was intended for the Asian market.

The “President” bracelet fitted to this watch was introduced when the model was launched in 1956. This model also features a folding clasp with invisible buckle, an option available at the time, but more expensive than the classic version with cap.
