An iconic model launched in 1956, the Day-Date has always been crafted in precious materials and remains one of the most exclusive watches made by Rolex.

Folding Clasp

Introduced in 1956, it was the first wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week in a window on the dial. Made exclusively from precious metals, it has always been synonymous with luxury, elegance and prestige.

With a diameter of 36mm, reference 18028 was produced between 1978 and 1989. This model, with its **smooth bezel**, is particularly rare. A wide variety of dial configurations were offered at the time, including some in semi-precious stone or wood, but all were now flat, unlike the domed dials present on the older reference 1803. Others were equipped with highly colored lacquered dials, the famous “**Stella**” dials. 

The name comes from a company called Stella, which supplied Rolex dialmakers with the special lacquer and gloss pigment used to make these dials. As these dials were produced over several decades, the colors and shades vary considerably. The example we have is bright red, creating a superb contrast with the yellow gold case.

Over the course of production, 4 types of dial have been produced, and the model we have here features a **4th** and last **generation** dial, recognizable by the chemin de fer minute track with Roman numerals signalling every five minutes.

The 2 most useful improvements for this reference were the addition of a sapphire crystal to guarantee greater water-resistance, and the quick date-setting function via the crown. This technical advance was made possible by the new 3055 caliber, replacing the 1555 caliber used in the previous generation.

As soon as this model was released, Rolex offered a choice of 25 different languages for the day display, English being the most common, but our model also features Italian.

This watch comes with its box, original warranty, card holder and manuals.

Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the first watch to simultaneously display the day of the week and the date in separate windows on the dial. Rolex has never concealed its association with influential personalities, including many heads of state, earning this model the nickname “President”.

Reference 18296, produced from 1989 onwards, is one of the most prestigious variations of the Day-Date, made exclusively in platinum. With a diameter of 36 mm, it is distinguished by its diamond-set lugs - a detail that further accentuates its luxurious and exclusive character, and contrasts with the simplicity of the smooth bezel.

Unlike previous generations, this model is equipped with caliber 3155. This automatic movement incorporates a quick-change day and date function via the crown, a major evolution in terms of user comfort. It offers a power reserve of around 48 hours and is chronometer-certified.

The dial of this model may vary from version to version, but it is often offered with precious finishes: diamond hour markers, mother-of-pearl or fine stone dials, and day displays available in several languages, in keeping with Day-Date tradition. This particular model features a dial with diamond hour-markers. Note that dials for platinum models feature larger diamonds than those for gold models. The day display is in English, the most commonly chosen language worldwide.

The **President** bracelet, a signature of the collection since 1956, is a natural accompaniment to this reference. Also in platinum, it features a folding clasp with invisible buckle, offering excellent comfort and a refined aesthetic.

The Rolex Day-Date 18296 is thus an emblematic and particularly refined watch, combining prestige, technical innovation and horological excellence.

With a diameter of 36mm, the reference 1803 was produced from the early 1960s to 1977. It is the first generation of Day-Date watches to have been in production for over 15 years. The main feature of this model is its domed “pie-pan” dial and domed plexiglass crystal. This brown dial, nicknamed “Ghost Cappuccino” or “Ghost Caramel,” is particularly rare because the inscriptions on it disappear depending on the angle of the light.

The Rolex caliber 1555 has a power reserve of approximately 42 hours and is not equipped with the quick date setting system on the crown, a feature that appeared with the following reference 18038 and caliber 3055.

With a diameter of 36mm, reference 18038 was produced between 1978 and 1989. A wide variety of dial configurations were offered at the time, including some in wood or semi-precious stone, as shown here with this superb **lapis lazuli** dial.

Natural stone dials, such as **Lapis lazuli**, **Onyx** or **Tiger eye**, began to be manufactured by Stern Frères in the early 1970s, thanks to the development of ultrasonic drilling techniques. Rolex, a loyal customer of Stern, was among the first to use these dials in its watches, notably in the Datejust model with four-digit references, and they were later mounted on Day-Dates with the introduction of five-digit references like the 18038 we have here.

The special feature of lapis lazuli is that it gives each watch a unique appearance due to the stone's natural variations, thanks in particular to inclusions of white calcite and golden pyrite.

The condition of a stone dial is an essential factor in its value, as they are relatively fragile and tend to crack over time. So a perfectly intact dial like this one will be much more sought-after and valued.

The most useful upgrade for this reference was the addition of a single quick-set date using the crown. The technical advancement came thanks to the new caliber 3055 replacing the calibers 1555 and 1556 used in the previous generation.

When this model was released, Rolex offered the possibility of choosing between 25 different languages for the day display, English being obviously the most commonly used throughout the world.

On this particular model, the buckle is marked "Made in Japan".
In the 1960s, Japan, whose economy was booming, decided to impose import duties on foreign products in order to protect their economy. To circumvent these duties, Rolex decided to export only the watch itself, without the bracelet, and to have the bracelets made directly in Japan, stamped with "Made in Japan"

The model we have here has a superb black dial with a sunray finish set with 8 brilliant-cut diamonds and 2 baguette-cut diamonds at 6 and 9 o'clock. This "no lume" dial has no luminescent material at each hour or on the hands.

This watch comes with its original Rolex international warranty and its original green tag.

Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was a pioneering timepiece, being the first watch to simultaneously display the day and date through an aperture on the dial. Known for its association with influential personalities, including many presidents, Rolex also gave this name to the bracelet of this model. 

Initially available in 36mm, the Day-Date was offered in 41mm around 2008 before being replaced in 2015 by 40mm cases. Made in Everose gold and equipped with a green dial with applied Roman numerals, this watch leaves no one indifferent. As soon as this model was released, Rolex offered a choice of 25 different languages for the day and date display, English obviously being the most commonly used around the world.

Here, however, it is in Arabic that this information can be read, a first indication of the rarity of this model.

It's on the back of the watch that all the magic happens, with the presence of the Sultanate of Oman's emblem logo. This symbol, composed of a sheathed Khanjar dagger with two crossed swords, symbolises the historical weapons used by the people of Oman. 

The warranty card dated 2020 is stamped by Khimji Ramdas, the only official retailer in Muscat, Oman. This suggests that the watch was given as a gift by the royal family of Oman.

This watch is delivered full set with its box, outer-box embossed with the Oman emblem, its original Rolex international warranty, manual and tag.

Everose Gold

Launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the first watch to display the day and date simultaneously through an aperture in the dial. Rolex has never made a secret of its association with influential personalities, including a number of presidents, a fact that has earned this model its nickname.
With a diameter of 36mm, reference 18239 was produced between **1989 and 2000**. A wide variety of dial configurations were offered at the time, including some in hard stone or even [wood](https://www.41watch.com/en/accueil/891-rolex-daydate-or-jaune-cadran-bois) (as our colleagues at 41Watch recently had), but all were now flat, unlike the domed dials present on the earlier reference 1803. 

The most useful improvement for this reference was the addition of a double function for rapidly setting the date and day using the crown. This technical advance was made possible by the new calibre 3155, which replaced the calibre 3055 used in the previous generation.

As soon as this model came out, Rolex offered a choice of 25 different languages for the day display, English obviously being the most commonly used around the world.

Our model has a rare black dial - the majority of production was silvered - with the inscription **"Swiss Made"** at 6 o'clock. This feature is only found from 1999 onwards and therefore only available for one year, indicating luminescent coating for index and hands, which match perfectly with our model produced in 1999. A dial with this inscription and an earlier production date would indicate that the original dial had been replaced during service.

The first Rolex model equipped with a quartz movement was the reference 5100, introduced in 1970 and produced in limited quantities until 1972. This model was equipped with the Beta-21 calibre, designed by the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH), a consortium of around 20 Swiss watch manufacturers, including Rolex, to create the first Swiss quartz movement. 

As Rolex wanted to develop their own movement in-house, the first Oysterquartz models did not appear until 1977 with the Datejust (calibre 5035) and Day-Date (calibre 5055). The model we have here, the Oysterquartz Day-Date, reference 19018N, has a 36mm case in yellow gold with an integrated bracelet with flat links and a fluted bezel. Unlike the 19018 version, this model has no chamfers on the lugs and a vertical brushed polish on the upper part.

The calibre 5055 has a 32 khz oscillator (4 times more than the Beta-21) to compensate for the effects of temperature and guarantee an accuracy of less than one minute per year, far superior to that of all Rolex mechanical movements at the time. In addition, this calibre has a hacking-second function and dual date and day setting, which did not appear on automatic calibres until 1988.

The watch comes with a Rolex travel pouch, its Rolex certificate of origin (date of sale 1987), a 2009 Rolex service guarantee card and manuals.
